Mubende hospital accountant held over sh400m

The former accountant of Mubende hospital, Peter Okot has been arrested over misappropriation of about sh400m.

Okot has been on the police wanted list since March 2012, when the loss of money was reported. He was arrested from Kasangati trading center in Wakiso district last Tuesday.

Okot with three other former accountants of the hospital allegedly embezzled the funds meant for primary health care for the hospital in March 2012.

The other suspects are Aston Kasangaki, Henry Okumu, and the late Joseph Okello. The police are hunting for Kasangaki and Okumu.

The police said Okot is suspected to have misappropriated sh270m out of the sh400m.

The spokesperson of the medicine and health monitoring unit, Judith Kayonga, said Okot a father of three, was found hiding in a rental apartment in Kasangati trading centre.

He is being detained at Kampala central police station, facing charges of embezzlement, abuse of office and forgery.

The case files are ready. ”We shall arraign him before the Mubende grade one Magistrates’ court before the end of the week,” said Kiyonga.

He said the police and the health monitoring unit had tracked Okot on phone for the last one year until he was arrested.
